So long, farewell!

Hey guys!

It looks like this will be the last post of the term for me...I hope exams aren't getting you down, and you're all getting ready to have a summer filled with fun! Before you head home I would recommend two things: a) residences have this lovely thing called a "free stuff" table, where you can deposit anything you don't need anymore and swap it for something else that you might need. It's a really cool idea...now if you don't live in rez like me, please don't break in lol, call a friend who lives there and have them let you in...its better for everyone.

the second thing is since the weather is so nice lately, if you haven't been to Duchesnay Falls I would recommend going. It's really beautiful and its something that is unique to our campus here at Nip/Can.

Well I guess that is all for me, until next time...keep on dancin'!

Crunch time

Hey guys!

I hope you all had a fabulous Easter weekend/long weekend/freedom from classes! I just got back and have started getting down to business. Good thing it got cold again-WAIT let me finish- BECAUSE if it were still nice and sunny out we wouldn't be studying for our exams, you know we'd be outside relaxing. Anyways, this year I have decided to be on track...well...
more on track than usual. I only have two exams this year so
I have set up a little schedule to force myself to study so I can ace
my exams. Now if you are like me you probably just cram the day
before and the day of and hope for the best, but really, how much do we really accomplish by doing that? I figure if I put the hard work in and get some decent marks there might be scholarship money in it. Now there is something that everyone can strive for...free money for school. So get crackin' and good luck, I hope everyone does really well on all their exams and has a great summer!

Until next time, keep on dancin' until we meet again!

Spotlight on Stage II

Hey Guys!

So I mentioned in my post awhile ago about the Nipissing and Canadore's Dance Club's end of the year show, "Spotlight on Stage"...well this was the weekend it happened!

This is the second annual Spotlight which was put on by the dance club, last year's show was a one night only deal, but this year had two nights: Friday the 26th and Sat the 27th! Both shows were very successful with about 60 people attending Friday's performance and over 100 attending Saturday's show. Every year the dance club chooses a charity to donate their proceeds to and this year Miss Cassandre Boland, the VP Internal of the club asked the club to donate to Variety: the children's charity, as she is involved with the charity and is currently Miss Northern Ontario. In May 2010 she will be going to the miss Canada competition and bringing the donations which were raised by the club to the organization.

This year we raised just over $700 for the charity! With contributions from both nights we raised around $900 with $200 going back to the club funds to pay for things like costumes, flowers and props. All the performances were amazing! There were many awesome dancers...solos, duets, group pieces as well as some talented singers!

We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us, we hope to see you next year at the show I am sure it will be phenomenal!

Until next time, keep on dancin' ...or supporting those who dance!

Kijiji North Bay

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you in on a cool site that might be helpful to those of you looking for...well...anything actually.

Kijiji is a buy/trade/sell site but anyone can post for free on it, so its a great way to find stuff. There's a housing section for anyone who wants to find a place to live off rez, and even a furniture
section to find things to fill your house with!

I first discovered this site last year around this time, and I have to say its really good if you're looking to buy things used, for example, I moved out of rez to an off campus place for this year and didn't have a desk or a dresser. I found the desk I have now for $20.00 and later on, I found the matching hutch for it for free. I also found the garage sale that led me to my $45.00 dresser purchase as well. Dressers are ridiculously expensive, and as students we don't have a lot of extra cash lying around, so if you are in need of anything, just type it in the search bar and try your luck, you may be surprised!

Deforestation?

Hey guys,

Yesterday I was walking to the monastery to do my art classes and I noticed that some big machines were tearing a chunk of trees out all the way from the monastery to the highway, enough that I could see the parking lot through the gap. What's going on?
I asked some of the profs about it and no-one seems to know. Well that land is owned by Nipissing now, so whats the deal? I'm very
interested to know what they are doing and why they are taking such a
big chunk of trees away. I spend 3 days a week at the monastery and I
know that there is a herd if about 8 deer who live in the forest where they are cutting, so I am a little concerned for them and where they will live if the continue to cut more...

Until next time keep on dancin'...and I'll keep on investigating

Times A Wastin'

Hey guys,

Lately I have been trying to get myself organized for next year, and I has come to my attention that Nip seems to be behind a little this year on course registration. Spring courses can be accessed online now, but you can't actually register until March 8th. That's great, very informative...however...when I asked about registration for next year no-one had any answers for me.
Word on the street ( the street in this case being the girl
who works at the academic advising front desk says she heard
as late as May 1st...

That's craziness! I can't remember exactly when we registered last year, but I know all my roommates and I were waiting up in rez until midnight when registration started. We were all there which means it happened before exams had started...so whats the deal?

I think they should give us some indication of what we are signing up for next year a little sooner. Take me for example, I am 3 credits short and either need to stay for a spring course or do overload next year, and since I need a specific course I can't just take any course that's offered.

I would rather do a 3 credit overload next year than have to stay here alone in the summer. I mean its doable, but I'd much rather take that month or two to work and make some money. No-one here is going to hire me for 4-8 weeks. So if I knew next year's schedule I could see if it fit into an open time slot, but since we theoretically wont know until may 1st, my spring course will be starting so there's really no option to wait it out and see.

Come on Nip, get it together!!!

Until next time keep on dancin' (and waiting)

Another year of Frosh!

Hey guys!

The frosh picks have been made and I would like to welcome all the new people who made it onto the 2010 frosh leader team. If you would like to learn more about these amazing individuals you can go to http://www.nusu.com/ and click "services" followed by "frosh". These are the people who braved the crrazzzyyy interview process and impressed the co-ordinators! To all of you who tried out but weren't chosen DON'T GIVE UP! Come out to wall nights, and events like shinerama, there is space enough for everyone to come and have a part in frosh week. Maybe next year is your year, so don't lose hope! There are so many amazing people that its really difficult to choose, so don't feel bad. Anyways I will see you on team #1 in September 2010!

Two reading weeks is always better than one...

Hey guys,

*Sigh* well its the end of reading week and I am back in North Bay for the big finish...the last weeks of school. Now some people know, Nip gets two reading weeks...I am really not sure why...word on the street is that the Northern schools get two because suicide rates are higher...I don't know if I believe that...but anyways two is wayyyy better than one. I really think all schools should have two reading weeks, it helps with the stress level of the students. I can't imagine not having a break from September until Christmas, that sounds crazy. And as much as some students take that week off, or go on vacation, I get SO much extra work done. I don't know about everyone else but the work just piles up in the last week of Feb, and then as soon as March hits, its non-stop homework. No outings, no bar, just staying in and making sure everything is handed in on time. So I hope that everyone had a great and productive reading week, and for all those people who got to go on vacation...SO jealous, but I hope you had a blast!

Until next time, keep on dancin'

Food for Fines!

Hey guys!

I wanted to tell you about a really awesome thing that's going on at the library, its called "Food for fines" and its a great program that gives back to students! We've all lost track of our book due date at one time or another, and the Nip library is here to give us a break. How it works is instead of paying off your library fines with cash, you can pay them off with non-perishable food items which will go to helping re-stock the student food bank.

So how it works is every item of food you bring equals $2 and you are allowed to bring up to $20 worth of items...so 10 is the max you can bring. So if you owe any money to the library, why not help out your fellow students and save yourself some cash!

Love Frosh? Sign up for an interview!

Hey guys!

Did you LOVE frosh week, and want to relive it again and again...I know I did! It's time to discover your inner frosh leader! Applications can be picked up in the NUSU office and you need to sign up for an interview. I've been a frosh leader for 2 years now and next year will be my last year, which actually breaks my heart! But as veterans retire...there are openings for new frosh leader positions. So if you've been considering it, take a chance and DO IT!

Its the MOST fun ever, no you don't get paid but it looks great on a resume and you get some pretty sweet swag and perks during the week. You do a little bit of training and then the frosh come and its all worth it.

Its also important to remember that you don't have to be a team leader, you can also apply to be an event leader as well, where you run the events for the frosh instead of looking after a team.

Anyone who is interested can apply to NUSU until Feb 22nd and interviews are the 23-25th.

VOTTEE!!!

Hey guys,

I know I am a little slow on the updates this week, BUT you need to go to the school and vote for who you want to see running NUSU next year! There are a lot of really great and interesting platforms, and I won't tell you about them because I want you to decide for yourself. The polls close at 6:30 tonight so there's still time. Have a say in how your school is run and VOTE!

Until next time,

That was a play

Hey everyone!

So last night I went to see "This is a play" which supported Habitat for Humanity. I have to say going into it I wasn't too sure what to expect, because it was only a half hour long. But I honestly LOVED it. The story was funny, the actors were great and overall it was really well done. I won't spoil too much in case you plan to go see it, but basically its about these three actors who are performing a play and their 3 minds that go along with them. There is something about lettuce which makes no sense whatsoever, but its OK because everything lettuce is brought up you laugh a little more. So I suggest going to see it! It's at the Nip Theatre, so you don't even have to go far, and come on guys its only $2 to see it. Besides all the proceeds are going to help the fine Nip students who are going to the States to help out those affected by Hurricane Katrina...how can you say no???

Until next time, keep on dancin!

It'ssssss Club Daze again!

Hey guys!

Just in case you haven't noticed the hallways are lined with tables, I thought I would mention club daze which is going on this week until Friday. Club daze is a great time to sign up for something really awesome that suits your interests. There are a ton to choose from, there's the dance club, the NUSU street team, habitat for humanity and even a zombie club!
So really you have to be able to find SOMETHING you like. Joining a club is a great way to meet other students with the same interests with you, and do something fun with your spare time (not that we have a lot as it is). Anyways I thought I would encourage you to join a club, and if you do, let me know how it goes!

Nip Can dance...did you know?

Hey guys!

I just wanted to share something cool with you, that you may not know about...Nip Can dance, literally. Nipissing and Canadore have a dance club which is open to ANYONE! That's right, anyone...you just have to have a love of dance to join. Both guys and gals welcome. We practice every Friday afternoon at 3:30 and there are TONS of styles to choose from...hip hop, zumba, lyrical, tap, step dance, jazz, you name it, we've done it.

The best part about this club...its FREE and its fun. It's completely student run, which means students are taking time out of their Friday afternoons to teach others their favourite style of dance. Take me for example, I teach hip hop...nobody pays me, I just do it because I love it. It's the perfect stress release. If you're super busy, stressed-out, come and take an hour or two out of your day and shake it off, it's that easy...you don't have to be a dance superstar to join.

If you're not so much into dancing yourself, but love to watch a good show, then you should come and see them perform on March 26th and 27th at their year end recital "Spotlight on Stage". Both are evening shows (times to come) and with two dates to choose from, how can you say no? The show also includes musical guests...singers, guitar players, pianists, you name it, so its a fun, chill evening (or two if you like it that much the first time) for everyone.

If there are any further questions, or if you are interested in joining, please contact nipudance@hotmail.com!

Until next time, keep on dancin'

Winter Classics Weekend!!!!

So this is my first blog ever! (I've been an avid facebook cree- I mean user for a long time but this is my first time as a blogger, so here we go!

To start off, I'll tell ya a bit about myself. I'm a third year fine arts major, in OTT. I work for Leave the Pack Behind on campus. I am the VP External for the Nipissing and Canadore Dance Club. I am also a frosh leader and usually attempt to be in any and all intramural sports and tournaments...so as you can see I am one involved Laker!

So this weekend was Winter Classics weekend at Nipissing, which is one of THE BEST weekends all year. For anyone who doesn't know Winter Classics is an event run by NUSAC (the athletic people) and its fun winter games played mostly outdoors, and some indoors. I've been on the same team since my first year, and we usually do pretty well for the most part. Winter Classics is kinda like frosh week (with alcohol for everyone!), there are points for actually winning events and there are also spirit points. My team is much better at spirit than actually winning, but this year we did ok in both! Its pretty exhausting doing all those events from 9-3, running around and singing cheers all day. Our team is only 14 people, compared to some who have 20-25 so we do what we can! This year my friend Dani broke her ankle in a dodgeball toury, so instead of replacing her on the team, we bought a sled and pulled her from event to event! What can I say? We're dedicated!
Dancing at the wall in the middle of the day is definately the best part. Everyone is dressed from head to toe in winter gear: boots, hats, snow pants, and we're all crammed on the stage singing our hearts out with a drink in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other! Did I mention its about 2 in the afternoon? Over all it makes for a fabulous weekend.
I was too tired after the awards ceremony I went to sleep before ever making it to the victory pub at the wall...I hear it was outrageusly fun though! Even if I missed out on the bar, there was no way I was missing out on Burger World!

Well thats all for today I think, more to come soon I am sure!

Keep on Dancin'!
